When my daughter first told me about a spiral slicer that would make spaghetti type noodles from zucchini, I was instantly intrigued.

I went straight to Amazon and found it, the GEFU Spirelli Spiral Slicer.

It looked useful for so many recipes, from slaw to soup, and pasta of course! That’s the reason I especially wanted one–pasta. After watching a video like the one below, I was sold.

I love pasta of any kind. I also love big bowls of it. This little slicer offers a fun, easy, and healthy way to eat pasta with far less calories. I ordered it (don’t you just love Amazon’s One-Click?), and hurried to the store to get zucchini, yellow crookneck squash, and some fresh carrots.

When it arrived two days later, I washed it and was ready to go.

I didn’t peal any of the vegetables, though you certainly can if you prefer. I just washed off the vegetables and went to work. When I try sweet potatoes (next on my list), I definitely will.

I started testing this little gadget on some zucchini and squash. Some of the zucchini spirals are over a foot long even. It’s so fun to play with!

The yellow squash worked as well too.

Next I tried the carrots just to see how the spiral slicer worked on a harder or denser raw vegetable.

Then since I was on a roll, I quartered a potato. Because of the squared edges on the cut potato, the pieces usually didn’t end up as long, but still cute and curly!

It’s so easy to use and no disassembly required for cleaning. Another plus in my book! I love easy. I’m also more likely to use it because of that.

All you have to do is cut the ends off of the squash and put it in the slicer. Apply pressure as you turn, and you’ll see.

It’s just basically a ceramic knife in a plastic cylinder, but the way it is put together makes it a lot easier to make these spirals.

I found it easier to hold the end of the squash with my hand rather than using the end piece.

The end piece worked better on the carrot and potato, but not quite as well on the soft squash.

It did okay, but seemed to take more pressure. Also expect an inch or so of the vegetable to be leftover, once it gets far enough along.

I just chopped the rest up, but you can always save it for soup.

It will be so easy for slaw-type dishes too. Use the spiral slicer, then chop a little and you’ll have bite size pieces. I will try them in eggs too, and in wontons or egg rolls.

It’s so fun to use the little thing I’m looking forward to experimenting.

I couldn’t resist baking the potato spirals. I sprayed a little grape seed oil on parchment paper, then a little more on the potato, sprinkled a little chili powder on the them and baked at 450 degrees for about 20 minutes.

The little potato nests came out tasty, similar to hash browns but with NO frying.

Wouldn’t kids love to eat zucchini this way too? I’m off to find something else to spiral-slice!

2. Now you want to find 10% of that number (if the number ends with 0 like 80 you only have to take the 0 off so you have 8 – if it’s a different number like 25, write the number with a decimal point at the end – 25. and then move the decimal point one place to the left – 2.5) – For 80 10% is 8
3. Subtract the answer from #2 from #1 80 – 8 = 72
4. Add 32 to the answer 72 + 32 =  104

That’s it – 40C = 104F  (Pretty Hot!!)

I think I will always think in Fahrenheit but I had to learn some quick tricks for daily life to quickly convert units – Do I need a sweater today? Does my child have fever? Am I baking in a very hot oven or medium? Am I deep frying or charring my wings? …

If You don’t have a calculator you can do most the math in your head and come out with a pretty close number – If you don’t need an exact number you can use this

Keep in mind that Celsius is almost half of Fahrenheit

Fahrenheit boils water at 212 degrees – Celsius boils at 100 degrees

Fahrenheit freezes at 32 degrees – Celsius goes swimming at 32 degrees

The range from freezing to boiling in Celsius is 0-100 or 100 degrees difference

The range from freezing to boiling in Fahrenheit is 32-212 or 180 degree difference

That means a Fahrenheit degree is much smaller than a Celsius one – Ice cream that’s freezing (32F or 0C) almost has to go up 2 Fahrenheit degrees for every Celcius one before it boils (212F or 100C) – It’s actually 9/5, not fully 2 times (2 times would be 10/5)

In daily life, I was always converting Celsius to Fahrenheit so these the short cuts I found:

Look at the steps above

1. Divide by 5 – Any number that ends with 5 or 0 is easy to divide in your head, so just round to the closest 5 or 0 number
2. Now multiply that number by 9 – Do you remember the trick for multiplying by 9? (back to grade 3 or 4 when you learned the times table) – Any number times 9 – Hold up your hands – if you need 9 times 4, put down your fourth finger, starting on the left – Now, how many fingers are on the left of the one that’s down? (3) How many are on the right? (6) – so 9 x 4 = 36
3. Now add 32 to the number (36 + 32 = 68) – with a number like 32 you probably won’t add to a number over 9

If you rounded up or down more than 1 degree add or subtract that degree from your answer

Now, I have to confess, I am pretty good at math, but this is basically simple math so even if math wasn’t your best subject, you can probably do it too

I really don’t need exact numbers so I can usually use the method of rounding to the nearest 5. In addition, I have learned a few of the daily numbers by heart-

25C = 77F, 30C= 86F, 40C = 104F, 20C = 68F, 15C = 59F — Those are most the temperatures I need in my current home  so while I still “feel” in Fahrenheit, when I hear 25C I automatically think “nice spring day”

Oven Temperature

I just remember the most common temperature for baking – my oven is now Celsius so I think the other way

350F = 180C,  325F = 170C, 400F = 200C

Learn those and it’s easy – every 25 degree Fahrenheit is a 10 degree jump Celsius

Fever

For those you really need exact but if you use them a lot (my kids are always sick) there is a method to remember it all

36.5C = 97.7F, 37C=98.6F, 37.5C = 99.5F, 38C = 100.4F… 40C = 104F

It just goes in steps every step up of .5 Celsius is a step up of .9 in Fahrenheit
